Eight polio vaccination workers have been shot dead in a single day in Afghanistan, in what is thought to be the deadliest attack in the global eradication campaign in nearly a decade.
The United Nations condemned the shootings, which came as officials had only just begun to express hope that the mission to stamp out poliovirus in Afghanistan and Pakistan had turned a corner after years of setbacks and frustration.
In 2021 there was one polio case in Pakistan, four cases in Afghanistan and one in Malawi. The latter is an imported case from Pakistan, this detection does not affect the WHO African Region`s wild polio virus free certification status officially marked in August 2020.
To date in 2022 there has been one case detected in Afghanistan.
