The decision to form a Rotary Club in Batemans Bay was made in 1960 under the sponsorship of the Rotary Club of Moruya.
This action followed a survey initiated by the District Governor of the time in District 270. At that time Rotary District 270 covered the whole of Southern NSW from Sydney to Bega and as far inland as Albury, Griffith, Bathurst and Orange.
The survey was a great success and the first organisational meeting to form the Rotary Club of Batemans Bay was held on 18th May 1960 in the CWA rooms in Beach Road, Batemans Bay where twenty five prospective members were present.
Rotary International (RI) granted the Charter for the new club on 10th June 1960. It was presented at the Charter Meeting held on 13th August 1960. This was one of the last functions to be held in the School of Arts Memorial Hall in Orient Street (this building was later to make way for the Commonwealth Bank).
The Charter meeting was the social event in the town with visiting Rotarians and partners coming from as far afield as Nowra and Griffith, and the District Governor coming from Narrandera. Pre-dinner drinks were held at the CWA rooms then everyone walked to the Hall – what an impressive sight 80 people must have made!
Thursday evening Rotary meetings were held in the CWA rooms (formerly the Batemans Bay Primary School). This venue was to last for many years with the catering done by a local married couple who spoilt members with their excellent cooking and probably helped the club achieve 100% attendance for quite a few years!
Over the years, meeting places have changed around Batemans Bay. The club lost the caterers at the CWA, then moved to the Soldiers Club, had a stint at the Bowling Club and then a long term at the Catalina Club followed by holding weekly meetings at the Mariners Lodge Hotel Motel from 12th March 1987 for nearly 20 years.
In 2007 we moved to Baywaters Inn and then in recent years we have been meeting back at the Batemans Bay Soldiers Club again.
We currently meet every Thursday night by zoom, face to face for a dinner meeting at the Batemans Bay Soldiers Club or at another local venue. Details of all our meetings and events are shown on the calendars page.
Our First Fifty Years (1960 - 2010)
A booklet titled ’50 Years of Service’ was printed to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Batemans Bay Rotary Club. The booklet is presented in two parts. The first section was compiled and written by the late Past President Cleve Graham in the publication ‘The First Forty Years’ which was published in 2000. The second section was written by the late Past President Joe Scorer and covers the last decade of the ’50 Years of Service’ summarised in a booklet published by the club in 2011.
You can read a pdf version of the booklet by clicking here: Fifty Years of Rotary in Batemans Bay.
The Last Ten Years (2011-2020)
Batemans Bay Rotary has now initiated a project to record and publish our club history over the last decade (2011 to 2020). Club members and past presidents are currently compiling the information and we hope to be able to bring it to you shortly, here.
